00:08:32
The u.s.
00:08:33
Ambassador to the United Nations Nikki
Haley today announced she would resign at
00:08:38
the end of the year President Donald
Trump praised her work at the u.n.
00:08:43
And in the administration Haley said she
was proud of her work and that now the
00:08:48
u.s.
00:08:49
Is respected internationally she thanked the
president and his family for their support
00:08:55
she did not say what she planned to do
next however Haley did say she would
00:09:00
campaign for Trump's
00:09:01
a reelection in the 2020 election and would
not be running for office the always
00:09:07
White House correspondent had she would
of course water spoke with our colleague
00:09:12
Kate Dawson about this surprise announcement
Well what we know is that that was
00:09:18
a very effusive send off from the president
and this is very different from the
00:09:23
usual cabinet 2nd cabinet member leaving
his or her post President Trump spoke very
00:09:29
highly of embassador Hayley and she and
he did say that you know she mentioned 6
00:09:35
months ago that she was thinking about
taking some time off and basically we don't
00:09:39
really know much about the resignation and
other than what was said today at the
00:09:44
press conference which is
00:09:46
a she's staying until the end of
the year and also that she is.
00:09:52
Leaving not just for personal reasons
because her family is so supportive of her
00:09:57
but she just said and I quote I know that
when it's time to step aside and she also
00:10:02
want to make more to make sure that this
administration has the best person to
00:10:07
fight this fight at the United Nations
so we don't really know what that means
00:10:12
other thing that she mentioned was that she
believed in term limits and. She's also
00:10:17
saying that she is not running in 2020 as
00:10:21
a presidential candidate now we
know that as journalists whenever
00:10:24
a politician says that they're not running
it just makes us want to watch them more
00:10:28
because they always say that they're not
running until they do President Trump said
00:10:32
that he will appoint
00:10:34
a new successor in 2 or 3 weeks again
there's already so much speculation on that
00:10:38
person as well what was her role
in setting porn policy as the u.n.
00:10:44
Ambassador when the how he is certainly
someone that is very trusted in Tom circle
00:10:50
and she's also widely regarded as one of
the strongest members of the president's
00:10:54
foreign policy team and I would I do recall
that when she accepted the job as u.n.
00:10:59
Ambassador she requests it specifically
to President Trump that she will be
00:11:03
involved in policy and decision making
process and he did grant for that request
00:11:08
but we also have to remember that she's
00:11:10
a very early and frequent critic of Trump
on issues like racism on the Muslim ban
00:11:15
we have to remember remember that she's
00:11:17
a daughter of an immigrant for South
and that background me perhaps effect
00:11:20
a world view and during
her one year one and
00:11:25
a half years on the job she has repeatedly
spoken her mind in some cases quite
00:11:29
against the president's policies himself
you know Ambassador Haley has visited
00:11:34
Africa and was involved in
00:11:36
a number of issues concerning the continent
was her stance on Africa seen as
00:11:42
being different than that of the White House
I would say that her stance on Africa
00:11:47
is different from the White House in the
in the sense that it is more nuanced The
00:11:51
general perception is that the
Trump White House does not put
00:11:55
a lot of emphasis on Africa does not see
Africa beyond the lenses of countering
00:12:00
China's influence or helping in the fight
against terrorism or humanitarian aid
00:12:05
which President Trump has proposed to cut
I think embassador how Halle's saw Africa
00:12:11
as much more than this as we can see from
her op ed before departing on her 2017
00:12:16
effort. And for where she
argued that the u.s.
00:12:20
Interests in Africa are not just humanitarian
but also economic and strategic you
00:12:25
would recall that Halle visited
Ethiopia South Sudan and the d.r.s.
00:12:29
In 2017 to review u.s.
00:12:32
Supported un peacekeeping mission there
assess conflict resolution in South Sudan
00:12:37
and also delayed elections in
the d r c And she delivered
00:12:40
a very strong message to leaders of
South Sudan and the d r c that the u.s.
00:12:43
Would hold them accountable for their actions
so the general consensus consensus on
00:12:48
Africa is that she redeemed previous gaffes
the previous missteps from Trump and
00:12:53
the administration on Africa her stance
is definitely more nuanced I think
00:13:00
she was able to translate
00:13:01
a lot of the policy that was not very much
well articulated from the White House on
00:13:07
on the u.n.
00:13:07
On Africa as White House correspondent
Patsy. Speaking with Kate pound. The
00:13:24
World Bank says Kenya has made modest but
sustained progress in reducing poverty
00:13:29
over the last decade its latest report
says the share of the population living
00:13:33
below the poverty line fell from
46.8 percent in 2005 through 2006 to
00:13:40
36 point one percent and 2015 through
2016 from Nairobi Ruben trauma reports
00:13:47
the international Linda sees progress
came mainly in rural areas where poverty
00:13:52
levels declined from 50 percent
to 38 percent poverty incidence
00:13:59
remained unchanged. Philippe Jaramillo
is there was bank Kenya country director
00:14:06
Kenya's annual g.d.p.
00:14:08
Growth rate has averaged 5.3 percent
this is the number significantly above
00:14:15
the average for sub-Saharan Africa which
is only $4.00. When one of the truly
00:14:21
important. Parts of this period has
been the remarkable expansion of
00:14:27
telecommunications in more while financial
services which has shifted carriers
00:14:33
economic paradigm to an extent in the
speed rarely seen in developing countries
00:14:40
poverty reduction in Kenya is low when
compared with other countries in the
00:14:45
Sub-Saharan Africa region
but not when compared with
00:14:48
a lot me 2 income countries while Dwight
the senior water bank official Ses
00:14:54
consumption has grown significantly among
households in the bottom 40 percent of
00:15:00
the distribution and particularly among
the poorest of the poor at the same time
00:15:05
Kenya has successfully recovered and whether
from some strong shocks the outbreak
00:15:12
of political violence. In 2007 the 2008
00:15:19
financial global financial crisis and the
very harsh drought that struck the Horn
00:15:25
of Africa in 2011 which was then
aggravated by rising global
00:15:32
oil prices however economists warned
that the East African largest economy is
00:15:38
falling short as it is not on track
to eradicate extreme poverty by 2030
00:15:45
manger mantilla He's an
economist at the water bank and
00:15:50
a lead author of the report the difference
between the poverty rate in urban areas
00:15:55
is basically no different from what
it was before but it has resulted in
00:16:01
a. Urbanization of poverty the number
of women poor are increased by 1500000
00:16:08
from 2300000 to 3800000 in 10
years Nonetheless the majority of
00:16:15
the poor almost 80 percent still live in
rural areas so we must not forget about
00:16:21
this and actions to help those people in
rural areas be out of be out of poverty
00:16:27
she said inequality is rising in areas
within Nairobi poverty is highly
00:16:33
concentrated in informal settlements where
living conditions are far wise than
00:16:38
those in similar settlements in either major
African cities nearly I thought of the
00:16:44
residents in informal settlements in the
Kenyan capital are poor compared to just 9
00:16:49
percent of the population living outside
those areas Reuben viewing News Nairobi.
00:17:06
Told from the border outbreak in the
eastern Democratic Republic of Congo keeps

an armed group advanced into the heart of

00:17:30
115 people have died since the 1st case was

00:19:20
African women conservationists across the
continent are taking the lead to protect
00:19:25
elephants through the elephant protection
initiative also known as e.p.i.
00:19:30
Women from various African countries are
working together to reduce the plummeting
00:19:35
populations of elephants despite their
differing political and social environments
00:19:40
while inspiring
00:19:41
a new generation of conservationists these
women are pushing for the implementation
00:19:46
of the National elephant action plans drawn
up by African governments to protect
00:19:51
their elephant populations
the initiative will be
00:19:54
a major player at the illegal wildlife
trafficking conference taking place in
00:19:59
London October 11th and. Well Dr Wendy
curio is the technical advisor for the
00:20:05
e.p.i.
00:20:05
She spoke with me about the importance of
this initiative it brings together very
00:20:11
high level political will for
Allison conservation because it is
00:20:15
a presidential led initiative it brings
together heads of state in this us from
00:20:20
Africa to speak about Elephant Conservation
The 2nd thing was important to set home
00:20:27
4 years ago when it was touted it has been
able to good rule from 5 countries to 19
00:20:33
countries in this country to present the
largest elephant populations in Africa so
00:20:40
we have Kenya we have built
one now we have times on
00:20:42
a mission to the south all countries
that have very like and it's simple
00:20:46
permissions so when you bring to give of
that kind of power line and initiative
00:20:51
political power I think that what
you're saying is that you can make
00:20:54
a difference that's what the e.p.i.
00:20:56
Hopes to do why have women taken on this
type of challenge I would say that in the
00:21:03
consolation world not all there are many
women that have reason through the wrong
00:21:10
farm policy and that look if you live well
I'm talking about some ministry or level
00:21:15
technical advice or
00:21:16
a level boots on the ground you know women
need security services and the reason I
00:21:22
think is just the
realisation that wildlife
00:21:26
a wildlife resource is everybody's business
everybody has just to have hung on back
00:21:31
it is not culturally easy for women in
Africa to get involved in the field of
00:21:37
conservation because by nature conservation
takes you away from home conservation
00:21:42
puts you in dangerous situations in the
field conservation puts you at the table
00:21:48
with
00:21:48
a large percentage of men and for your voice
to be had you have to really be strong
00:21:54
and so it is really moving away from the
cultural construct of the African woman
00:22:00
why do we do that. Because we have to
because we must we recognize that our voice
00:22:06
must be heard as far as conservation in
Africa scones and what progress are you
00:22:12
making in getting the national Allison
action plans implemented nationally to fund
00:22:17
action plans our vision fitting for
time to enough because it's been
00:22:20
a long journey home when we 1st thought
about this national defense action plans
00:22:24
because it's really 80 as
00:22:26
a goal but after that came together and
thought we need some from for Africa's
00:22:31
elephants It took a long time for
the countries to get to give
00:22:35
a because they like to
come via coal they left
00:22:37
a forum where they could focus clearly on
nationally to find out some plan when the
00:22:41
elephant protection initiative came
to be it became a pia of e.p.i.
00:22:47
To ensure that countries
develop nationally in
00:22:49
a fun tough home front we have walked
slowly with members of elephant protection
00:22:54
initiative and we're happy to say that
during this on the conference we have
00:22:58
a package of 7 complete nationalism
runs by complete we mean an action plan
00:23:05
with an implementation plan and
00:23:07
a resource mobilization front when we
budgeted to the extent that any do not
00:23:12
complete up the document pick up
00:23:14
a few projects and pay out what this band
is it's important because it brings the
00:23:19
whole of thought around and if I'm
conservation in one document you are there at
00:23:23
the wildlife trafficking conference in
London so what are the expectations
00:23:28
regarding putting elephant protection as
00:23:32
a main priority they are the elephant
protection initiative was launched 4 years
00:23:37
ago at the illegal wildlife trade conference
that was held in London the e.p.a.
00:23:41
Was launched by 5 presidents now we have
19 heads of state and them in the so said
00:23:47
health science of this initiative
00:23:49
a good number of family will be present at
this conference we expect that when this
00:23:55
kind of political will come by and we've
00:23:58
a lot of global friends who are also going
to be in the. In France don't that's
00:24:02
a tough historically supported end of
some protection we expect when we see how
00:24:07
often to has to come together and the
pa why they've put behind Elephant
00:24:10
Conservation the Vis is going to result
in resources that we by Billy needs to
00:24:16
implement these plants. That was Dr Wendy
she's the technical advisor for the
00:24:21
elephant protective initiative
she spoke with me from London.

Uganda celebrates 56 years of independence
in his speech to mark the York Asian
00:24:36
President Yoweri and was 70 touted some
of his government's ments in building
00:24:41
infrastructure and pushing economic growth
he also said greater law enforcement is
00:24:48
needed blaming crime on terrorists he
said those who criticize the country are
00:24:53
jealous of its success however many in
Uganda say was 70 who has been in office
00:25:00
32 years increasingly is trying to shut
down critics and the political opposition

v.o.a.
00:25:13
Yesterday there's really nothing to
celebrate because Ugandans are fighting the
00:25:17
same battles that their forefathers
fought it to gain independence from Great
00:25:22
Britain but the wind says Ugandans under
32 years of use of the new rule have been
00:25:29
marginalized in their

America. This is v.o.a.
00:28:37
Sonny Young in Washington well.
Sunny side of sports the
00:28:43
qualifying competition for next year's
Africa Cup of Nations football tournament
00:28:49
and Cameroon resumes on Wednesday
with matches in Zambia and
00:28:55
Ethiopia and dolla 2012 Nations
Cup champions Zambia is that
00:29:02
home against Guinea Bissau now in
00:29:04
a group Kate contest Guinea-Bissau now
in Mozambique currently top the group
00:29:11
standings each team has 4 points
from 2 qualifiers Zambia and Namibia
00:29:18
have $1.00 Mozambique will host Namibia
in the other group match on Saturday
00:29:25
and. The top 2 teams in the group will
qualify for next year's tournament in
00:29:31
Cameroon our Voice of America
football fans will remember Cameroon
00:29:38
2019 will be the 1st Nations
Cup expanded from 16 to
00:29:44
24 teams Meanwhile in by
here Dar on Wednesday
00:29:50
Ethiopia will play neighbor
Kenya in a group f.
00:29:55
Fixture now this is
00:29:57
a very tight group right now Ghana
Kenya and Ethiopia each have 3
00:30:03
points from 2 matches and Sierra Leone
is at the bottom with no points the
00:30:10
Leone stars of Sierra Leone are scheduled
to visit Guyana on Thursday but that
00:30:16
qualify. Ired to be played in commodity
is in jeopardy right now world football's
00:30:23
governing body feet 1st suspended
Sierra Leone 4 days ago for government
00:30:28
interference Sierra Leone has appealed
the suspension for reaction to the
00:30:35
suspension reporter Iron Mike in-born Yeah
I spoke with the sports editor of The
00:30:41
News Agency of Nigeria Peter Damian
00:30:44
a geo for it is already known to ban worse
because of government intervention it's
00:30:50
a good development for football in Africa
food book globally I said this because
00:30:57
government in their fair and side led to
crises in the money demand of football in
00:31:02
Africa in fact it's also responsible for
Milan ministration unaccountability in
00:31:07
a non share corruption is similar thing
almost happened to Nigeria on them but the
00:31:12
2 countries quickly obeyed the deadline
given by Fifa What do you fink African
00:31:17
countries should do to stay away from
governmental affairs and to save themselves
00:31:22
from 50 or so special African countries
should lend from these developments and
00:31:29
begin to walk for the financial independence
of the book of name bodies in the
00:31:35
countries where financial independence
issues of my land ministration corruption
00:31:41
are not contact Billy d.
00:31:43
Under law that issues that lead to
crises in football management would be
00:31:46
eliminated because do screwy state down
money in food bowl would want to ask
00:31:51
questions about how good ball is wrong too
I think that the 1st India should do is
00:31:57
to seek financial independence of the.
Governing bodies in the Al respective
00:32:03
countries if that is done those bodies will
now begin to get funding by themselves
00:32:09
I give you an example in Nigeria for
instance when my droopy Nick became the
00:32:14
president of the Nigerian Football Federation
he me. He didn't really said I had to
00:32:18
walk to get sponsors or Nigerian food book
we have examples in NY to go which is
00:32:24
sponsored by the energy company we
have Coca-Cola and we have seen his
00:32:30
administration attract
00:32:31
a lot of goodwill from companies here in
Nigeria for instance keenness who survived
00:32:37
us 2 I think he should walk for financial
independence once they secured everyone
00:32:42
that info's in place the you think various
governments in Africa will want to be
00:32:47
steamy we're in the role of football I mean
especially the continent do you foresee
00:32:51
that I don't care as long as I do want
to fund in full bore especially at the
00:32:57
national level I don't see them not
interfering because he would be easy by about
00:33:02
the days to tune so one thing we should
fight for East to make these bodies
00:33:09
independent good our own fortunes and run
for their own way on their own terms and
00:33:14
for Syria has received this if if I'm
now what do you think we should do to
00:33:19
overcome it it's very simple the shoot sure
that the president Johanson and he said
00:33:26
tree I restored to office I mean to
00:33:28
a lot of going to Shan sacrificed like
giving them access to administration access
00:33:34
to the premisses access to the bodies
accounts that's the only way they can get out
00:33:41
of anything fiber that's Peter Damian agio

00:33:47

reporter Iron Mike in Lagos Nigeria

I'm Sonny young and you're listening

00:34:10
a 30 min shortlist for the Bollen door

00:34:17
Football magazine on December 3rd in
Paris Argentine superstar Li an elm
00:34:24
Messi and Portugal's Cristiana Rinaldo
have dominated the Bolland door over the
00:34:30
past decade and they're both on that 30
man short list the last player to win the
00:34:36
trophy before either Rinaldo or
Messi was the Brazilian Ca in
00:34:43
2007. Croatia and Ryall Madrid

1st winner of the Bollen doored
00:35:41
trophy this year for the 1st time
00:35:44
a women's Bolland or trophy will be

Fifi best female player award in

London last month I'm Sonny young
and you're listening to me side of
00:36:04
sports on the Voice of America.
Well sometimes football
00:36:11
is more than just a game it's
00:36:14
a way of life that expresses the true spirit
of the team and its community. That's
00:36:21
the underlying message behind Amy
Bass's new book one goal a coach
00:36:26
a team and the game that brought
00:36:29
a divided town together
it's the inspiring story of
00:36:34
a group of teenage Somali
refugees in the northeastern u.s.
00:36:38
State of Maine who joined the Lewiston
high school soccer team and overcame
00:36:44
prejudice and other obstacles to help the
squad when the 2015 state championship.
00:36:52
In her conversation with Vo ways Adam
Philips Bass said that one goal is
00:36:58
actually about 2 games games the game of
soccer the most global of sports but it's
00:37:04
also about
00:37:04
a very specific game that took place in
the fall of 2015 when the Lewiston Blue
00:37:09
Devils went to seek their 1st state
championship title in soccer with
00:37:14
a very different kind of roster tell me a
bit about Louis Louis to me and it was
00:37:19
a largely French Canadian town
00:37:21
a former factory town textile industry the
bottom fell out when factories closed
00:37:26
and moved out of the northeast so it was
00:37:28
a town that had seen better days
and in 2001 a couple and then
00:37:33
a couple 100 in the couple 1000 Molly
refugees found their way to lose didn't
00:37:38
taking advantage of the vailable apartments
that had the rates and good schools and
00:37:43
a safe community to begin to continue their
lives and raise their families in the
00:37:48
United States and some of these kids found
their way to the soccer team soccer is
00:37:53
a passion and this story is about his
coming together of community and family and
00:37:59
team in this quest for this state title
and what it means to this community and
00:38:04
what it represents you know community is
not just about statistics it's also about
00:38:08
a feeling a feeling of home and a
feeling of belonging and that's
00:38:11
a priority here since you said there were
lots and lots of growing pains at least
00:38:15
at 1st I mean it's hard to think of 2
cultures that are more different than Samoan
00:38:19
culture these people came from and they
needed to bring with theirs they founded
00:38:23
post-industrial Lewiston Maine you know I
mean on the internet this is very much
00:38:26
a fish out of water story you know people's
reaction is why are there Africans in
00:38:30
Maine it's such
00:38:31
a cold state it's overwhelmingly white state
in the early days you had moments like
00:38:36
when the former mayor wrote an open letter
to the Somali community saying you know
00:38:39
we support you please tell your friends
and family to stop coming weeks you don't
00:38:43
have anymore and so that's a painful moment
but it's hollowed by a coming together
00:38:48
a giant rally that the community puts
together kids. Sort of say No You know we are
00:38:53
many and we are one so there's something
00:38:55
a bit more to it than either the 2 groups
polarizing or sort of becoming one Hubba
00:38:59
Gini is a group without
distinctions it's really
00:39:03
a negotiation amongst different peoples
to to find a path forward and there's
00:39:08
a lot of culture clash but Maine is the
oldest median age in the United States and
00:39:14
q.
00:39:15
Have folks who are interested in laying
roots and raising families and having their
00:39:19
families raise families was
00:39:22
a shock me arm that Lewiston needed in terms
of attracting business and attracting
00:39:26
industry in the city that I hadn't
seen that for a very long time in
00:39:30
a state that doesn't see that of course
it's not really equivalent with both Lewis
00:39:35
and community and the Somalis had both
experiences drama and displacement the small
00:39:40
ways obviously because of war and famine
and cetera but the loosened folks had also
00:39:45
been through
00:39:45
a lot I could understand perhaps why it
least at 1st there might have been some
00:39:49
resentment against refugees lose them
has had decades and decades of white
00:39:54
intergenerational poverty as some of the
poorest neighborhoods in Maine and there
00:39:59
is that sort of competitive What are these
new people getting and I'm not getting
00:40:04
so all this is great back when it's know
about the growth in integration within the
00:40:08
Louis and high school I do there are lots
of reasons slurs and things that opposing
00:40:12
teams use but it seems like people got
together pretty well within Lewis in itself
00:40:17
family started coming on to the team
in the mid to early 2000 just a few at
00:40:21
a time and the book sort of details some
of those early players coming on in
00:40:26
different kinds of accommodations that
00:40:28
a lot of department heads think about in
terms of you know diet in Ramadan and how
00:40:32
to integrate players and create relationships
amongst players but slowly the Somali
00:40:39
players began to dominate the varsity
roster I know that soccer was in such
00:40:43
a huge deal and all of the moves to before
the Somalis arrived then began to really
00:40:48
shine correct Lucent said championship
Accutane. At the championship cheerleading
00:40:53
town and slowly soccer was becoming
00:40:55
a marquee sport they make it to the state
championship in 2014 they suffered
00:41:00
a devastating loss and you know the day
after that loss the next season begins
00:41:06
because they are determined that they're
going to be the ones to bring this city
00:41:11
its 1st championship in this sport and
it's really an all hands on deck kind of
00:41:14
effort he has
00:41:15
a high school coach is working but the
families and the supporters of the team we
00:41:19
see community organizations you know
Somali founded community organizations are
00:41:24
sponsoring soccer programs and
supporting youth and we see
00:41:28
a bridging of cultures amongst coaches
you know the longtime head coach of
00:41:32
a high school team hiring objects of our
Hersey the 1st Somali hired by the loose
00:41:36
an athletic department is the son of Bob
Dylan he is sort of the coach of everyone
00:41:41
in the city
00:41:41
a mentor of everyone so it's really about
thinking about what these kids in this
00:41:47
community bring to the game and it isn't
that soccer replaces hockey in this main
00:41:51
city it's that now it's
00:41:52
a hockey and soccer town that was
Amy bass author of one goal a coach
00:41:59
a team and the game that brought
00:42:01
a divided town together she spoke with
Vo ways Adam Philips and New York I'm
00:42:08
Sonny Young in Washington and you're
listening to the sunny side of sports on the
00:42:14
Voice of America.
00:42:32
My v.o.a.
00:42:33
Colleague when Newton joins us now with
some news about the Shanghai Masters men's
00:42:39
tennis tournament which is underway in
China sporty greetings. Sporty Greetings
00:42:46
sunny Argentine Juan Martinez Germany's
Alexanders the Vera. And defending
00:42:53
champion Roger Federer of Switzerland
are featured in the tournament. The man
00:42:59
Federer defeated in last year's
final is recovering from
00:43:03
a knee injury and is not there but he's
been replaced by Serbian Novak Djokovic who
00:43:09
on Tuesday defeated Frenchman Jeremy day
for the 12th straight time spoke after the
00:43:16
match and said he feels like
he's playing at top form. I
00:43:23
think.
00:43:37
That's pretty close to the joke of it's
played his 1st match on the a.t.p.
00:43:41
Tour since winning his 14th Grand
Slam title at last month's u.s.
00:43:46
Open and Tuesday's win marks the 14th
consecutive victory on the hard court said
00:43:53
after having surgery These
are good signs he's making
00:43:56
a full recovery very.
Beginning of the year.
00:44:18
Also in the spotlight but for
00:44:20
a very different reason Australian the
curios created controversy for 3rd straight
00:44:26
year in Shanghai going against an
Instagram message he posted ahead of the
00:44:31
tournament with the caption I'll be good I
promise on Monday curious faced American
00:44:36
Bradley Khan and in his defense curious was
good for about 30 minutes then early in
00:44:43
the 2nd said Curious with
00:44:45
a soft warning for what the chair umpire
called his borderline effort to which
00:44:51
curious. Reportedly responded I don't care
you have no right to tell me that it's
00:44:56
poor all timidly though his game unraveled
incurious lost his 1st round match
00:45:01
466463 Roger Federer has been an
outspoken critic of carious and in
00:45:08
a media conference ahead of his 1st match
Federer said whether or not Kerry is ever
00:45:13
reaches his full potential is entirely up
to him time will tell you know I think
00:45:19
he's
00:45:19
a great player. I feel also he can you know
bigger tournaments and do all these things
00:45:25
but there's still
00:45:27
a process in place that he needs to do like
any other player needs to go through to
00:45:30
be able to be successful Federer currently
ranked number 2 in the world is hungry
00:45:35
for a win following his
elimination at last month's u.s.
00:45:39
Open and he says he's ready to defend his
title in Shanghai feel like. I'm where I
00:45:45
want to be. I know this is
where I could be playing
00:45:49
a lot of tennis you know depending on how
I play so the. Shanghai is likely to be
00:45:56
Federer's final Masters great tournaments
of the year he said he has no plans to
00:46:01
play in the Masters $1000.00 tournaments
in Paris later this month and he says it
00:46:06
feels good to be in the season's homestretch.
Like this part of the season as you
00:46:12
know it's been always
00:46:13
a good season for me because this is going
faster I'm not sure if I have always
00:46:19
energy left in the tank or you
know it's helpful that I have
00:46:22
a home tournament the World Tour Finals
is where it is and on the surface it is
00:46:28
played on but I've been very successful.
For something similar again this year
00:46:34
Federer also spoke about
00:46:35
a match at the Sens and open last week in
China where Spaniard Fernando Verdasco
00:46:41
appeared to berate
00:46:42
a ball boy for not bringing him his towel
quickly enough video of the incident lit
00:46:48
up social media and followers expressed
their few. Yury over what they regarded as
00:46:53
for those intimidating behavior Federer
stopped short of criticizing for Das go but
00:46:59
called on tennis players to show their
respect for ball boys and girls Federer who
00:47:05
was once himself
00:47:06
a ball boy said although young helpers
understand the amount of pressure the
00:47:11
players are under it is
important that they too have
00:47:14
a good experience at tournaments on court
helpers handing players their towels
00:47:19
drinks than anything else they need is
00:47:22
a fairly new phenomenon not so long ago
tennis legends like American John McEnroe
00:47:27
and Sweden's Bjorn Borg had to take care
of themselves during changeovers and that
00:47:33
idea could be making a comeback next
month that next generation a.t.p.
00:47:38
Finals youth tournament in Milan towel
racks will replace ball kids at the end of
00:47:44
the court in one final bit of controversy
3 chair umpire is from Thailand have been
00:47:50
banned for life the umpires were found
guilty of match fixing and manipulating
00:47:56
scores at i
00:47:57
t f futures tournaments in 2017 the

00:08:32
The u.s.
00:08:33
Ambassador to the United Nations Nikki
Haley today announced she would resign at
00:08:38
the end of the year President Donald
Trump praised her work at the u.n.
00:08:43
And in the administration Haley said she
was proud of her work and that now the
00:08:48
u.s.
00:08:49
Is respected internationally she thanked the
president and his family for their support
00:08:55
she did not say what she planned to do
next however Haley did say she would
00:09:00
campaign for Trump's
00:09:01
a reelection in the 2020 election and would
not be running for office the always
00:09:07
White House correspondent had she would
of course water spoke with our colleague
00:09:12
Kate Dawson about this surprise announcement
Well what we know is that that was
00:09:18
a very effusive send off from the president
and this is very different from the
00:09:23
usual cabinet 2nd cabinet member leaving
his or her post President Trump spoke very
00:09:29
highly of embassador Hayley and she and
he did say that you know she mentioned 6
00:09:35
months ago that she was thinking about
taking some time off and basically we don't
00:09:39
really know much about the resignation and
other than what was said today at the
00:09:44
press conference which is
00:09:46
a she's staying until the end of
the year and also that she is.
00:09:52
Leaving not just for personal reasons
because her family is so supportive of her
00:09:57
but she just said and I quote I know that
when it's time to step aside and she also
00:10:02
want to make more to make sure that this
administration has the best person to
00:10:07
fight this fight at the United Nations
so we don't really know what that means
00:10:12
other thing that she mentioned was that she
believed in term limits and. She's also
00:10:17
saying that she is not running in 2020 as
00:10:21
a presidential candidate now we
know that as journalists whenever
00:10:24
a politician says that they're not running
it just makes us want to watch them more
00:10:28
because they always say that they're not
running until they do President Trump said
00:10:32
that he will appoint
00:10:34
a new successor in 2 or 3 weeks again
there's already so much speculation on that
00:10:38
person as well what was her role
in setting porn policy as the u.n.
00:10:44
Ambassador when the how he is certainly
someone that is very trusted in Tom circle
00:10:50
and she's also widely regarded as one of
the strongest members of the president's
00:10:54
foreign policy team and I would I do recall
that when she accepted the job as u.n.
00:10:59
Ambassador she requests it specifically
to President Trump that she will be
00:11:03
involved in policy and decision making
process and he did grant for that request
00:11:08
but we also have to remember that she's
00:11:10
a very early and frequent critic of Trump
on issues like racism on the Muslim ban
00:11:15
we have to remember remember that she's
00:11:17
a daughter of an immigrant for South
and that background me perhaps effect
00:11:20
a world view and during
her one year one and
00:11:25
a half years on the job she has repeatedly
spoken her mind in some cases quite
00:11:29
against the president's policies himself
you know Ambassador Haley has visited
00:11:34
Africa and was involved in
00:11:36
a number of issues concerning the continent
was her stance on Africa seen as
00:11:42
being different than that of the White House
I would say that her stance on Africa
00:11:47
is different from the White House in the
in the sense that it is more nuanced The
00:11:51
general perception is that the
Trump White House does not put
00:11:55
a lot of emphasis on Africa does not see
Africa beyond the lenses of countering
00:12:00
China's influence or helping in the fight
against terrorism or humanitarian aid
00:12:05
which President Trump has proposed to cut
I think embassador how Halle's saw Africa
00:12:11
as much more than this as we can see from
her op ed before departing on her 2017
00:12:16
effort. And for where she
argued that the u.s.
00:12:20
Interests in Africa are not just humanitarian
but also economic and strategic you
00:12:25
would recall that Halle visited
Ethiopia South Sudan and the d.r.s.
00:12:29
In 2017 to review u.s.
00:12:32
Supported un peacekeeping mission there
assess conflict resolution in South Sudan
00:12:37
and also delayed elections in
the d r c And she delivered
00:12:40
a very strong message to leaders of
South Sudan and the d r c that the u.s.
00:12:43
Would hold them accountable for their actions
so the general consensus consensus on
00:12:48
Africa is that she redeemed previous gaffes
the previous missteps from Trump and
00:12:53
the administration on Africa her stance
is definitely more nuanced I think
00:13:00
she was able to translate
00:13:01
a lot of the policy that was not very much
well articulated from the White House on
00:13:07
on the u.n.
00:13:07
On Africa as White House correspondent
Patsy. Speaking with Kate pound. The
00:13:24

sustained progress in reducing poverty
00:13:29

00:13:47

households in the bottom 40 percent of
00:15:00

the poorest of the poor at the same time
00:15:05
Kenya has successfully recovered and whether
from some strong shocks the outbreak
00:15:12
of political violence. In 2007 the 2008
00:15:19
financial global financial crisis and the
very harsh drought that struck the Horn
00:15:25
of Africa in 2011 which was then
aggravated by rising global
00:15:32
oil prices however economists warned
that the East African largest economy is
00:15:38
falling short as it is not on track
to eradicate extreme poverty by 2030

between the poverty rate in urban areas

it was before but it has resulted in
00:16:01
a. Urbanization of poverty the number
of women poor are increased by 1500000
00:16:08
from 2300000 to 3800000 in 10
years Nonetheless the majority of
00:16:15
the poor almost 80 percent still live in
rural areas so we must not forget about
00:16:21
this and actions to help those people in
rural areas be out of be out of poverty
00:16:27
she said inequality is rising in areas
within Nairobi poverty is highly
00:16:33
concentrated in informal settlements where
living conditions are far wise than
00:16:38
those in similar settlements in either major
African cities nearly I thought of the
00:16:44
residents in informal settlements in the
Kenyan capital are poor compared to just 9
00:16:49
percent of the population living outside
those areas Reuben viewing News Nairobi.

00:19:20
African women conservationists across the
continent are taking the lead to protect
00:19:25
elephants through the elephant protection
initiative also known as e.p.i.
00:19:30
Women from various African countries are
working together to reduce the plummeting
00:19:35
populations of elephants despite their
differing political and social environments
00:19:40
while inspiring
00:19:41
a new generation of conservationists these
women are pushing for the implementation
00:19:46
of the National elephant action plans drawn
up by African governments to protect
00:19:51
their elephant populations
the initiative will be
00:19:54
a major player at the illegal wildlife
trafficking conference taking place in
00:19:59
London October 11th and. Well Dr Wendy
curio is the technical advisor for the
00:20:05
e.p.i.
00:20:05
She spoke with me about the importance of
this initiative it brings together very
00:20:11
high level political will for
Allison conservation because it is
00:20:15
a presidential led initiative it brings
together heads of state in this us from
00:20:20
Africa to speak about Elephant Conservation
The 2nd thing was important to set home
00:20:27
4 years ago when it was touted it has been
able to good rule from 5 countries to 19
00:20:33
countries in this country to present the
largest elephant populations in Africa so
00:20:40
we have Kenya we have built
one now we have times on
00:20:42
a mission to the south all countries
that have very like and it's simple
00:20:46
permissions so when you bring to give of
that kind of power line and initiative
00:20:51
political power I think that what
you're saying is that you can make
00:20:54
a difference that's what the e.p.i.
00:20:56
Hopes to do why have women taken on this
type of challenge I would say that in the
00:21:03
consolation world not all there are many
women that have reason through the wrong
00:21:10
farm policy and that look if you live well
I'm talking about some ministry or level
00:21:15
technical advice or
00:21:16
a level boots on the ground you know women
need security services and the reason I
00:21:22
think is just the
realisation that wildlife
00:21:26
a wildlife resource is everybody's business
everybody has just to have hung on back
00:21:31
it is not culturally easy for women in
Africa to get involved in the field of
00:21:37
conservation because by nature conservation
takes you away from home conservation
00:21:42
puts you in dangerous situations in the
field conservation puts you at the table
00:21:48
with
00:21:48
a large percentage of men and for your voice
to be had you have to really be strong
00:21:54
and so it is really moving away from the
cultural construct of the African woman
00:22:00
why do we do that. Because we have to
because we must we recognize that our voice
00:22:06
must be heard as far as conservation in
Africa scones and what progress are you
00:22:12
making in getting the national Allison
action plans implemented nationally to fund
00:22:17
action plans our vision fitting for
time to enough because it's been
00:22:20
a long journey home when we 1st thought
about this national defense action plans
00:22:24
because it's really 80 as
00:22:26
a goal but after that came together and
thought we need some from for Africa's
00:22:31
elephants It took a long time for
the countries to get to give
00:22:35
a because they like to
come via coal they left
00:22:37
a forum where they could focus clearly on
nationally to find out some plan when the
00:22:41
elephant protection initiative came
to be it became a pia of e.p.i.
00:22:47
To ensure that countries
develop nationally in
00:22:49
a fun tough home front we have walked
slowly with members of elephant protection
00:22:54
initiative and we're happy to say that
during this on the conference we have
00:22:58
a package of 7 complete nationalism
runs by complete we mean an action plan
00:23:05
with an implementation plan and
00:23:07
a resource mobilization front when we
budgeted to the extent that any do not
00:23:12
complete up the document pick up
00:23:14
a few projects and pay out what this band
is it's important because it brings the
00:23:19
whole of thought around and if I'm
conservation in one document you are there at
00:23:23
the wildlife trafficking conference in
London so what are the expectations
00:23:28
regarding putting elephant protection as
00:23:32
a main priority they are the elephant
protection initiative was launched 4 years
00:23:37
ago at the illegal wildlife trade conference
that was held in London the e.p.a.
00:23:41
Was launched by 5 presidents now we have
19 heads of state and them in the so said
00:23:47
health science of this initiative
00:23:49
a good number of family will be present at
this conference we expect that when this
00:23:55
kind of political will come by and we've
00:23:58
a lot of global friends who are also going
to be in the. In France don't that's
00:24:02
a tough historically supported end of
some protection we expect when we see how
00:24:07
often to has to come together and the
pa why they've put behind Elephant
00:24:10
Conservation the Vis is going to result
in resources that we by Billy needs to
00:24:16
implement these plants. That was Dr Wendy
she's the technical advisor for the
00:24:21
elephant protective initiative
she spoke with me from London.

Uganda celebrates 56 years of independence

of his government's ments in building
00:24:41
infrastructure and pushing economic growth
he also said greater law enforcement is
00:24:48
needed blaming crime on terrorists he
said those who criticize the country are
00:24:53
jealous of its success however many in
Uganda say was 70 who has been in office
00:25:00
32 years increasingly is trying to shut
down critics and the political opposition
00:25:06

00:25:13
Yesterday there's really nothing to
celebrate because Ugandans are fighting the
00:25:17
same battles that their forefathers
fought it to gain independence from Great
00:25:22
Britain but the wind says Ugandans under
32 years of use of the new rule have been

marginalized in their

Sunny side of sports the
00:28:43
qualifying competition for next year's
Africa Cup of Nations football tournament
00:28:49
and Cameroon resumes on Wednesday
with matches in Zambia and
00:28:55
Ethiopia and dolla 2012 Nations
Cup champions Zambia is that
00:29:02
home against Guinea Bissau now in
00:29:04
a group Kate contest Guinea-Bissau now
in Mozambique currently top the group
00:29:11
standings each team has 4 points
from 2 qualifiers Zambia and Namibia
00:29:18
have $1.00 Mozambique will host Namibia
in the other group match on Saturday
00:29:25
and. The top 2 teams in the group will
qualify for next year's tournament in
00:29:31
Cameroon our Voice of America
football fans will remember Cameroon
00:29:38
2019 will be the 1st Nations
Cup expanded from 16 to
00:29:44
24 teams Meanwhile in by
here Dar on Wednesday
00:29:50
Ethiopia will play neighbor
Kenya in a group f.
00:29:55
Fixture now this is
00:29:57
a very tight group right now Ghana
Kenya and Ethiopia each have 3
00:30:03
points from 2 matches and Sierra Leone
is at the bottom with no points the
00:30:10
Leone stars of Sierra Leone are scheduled
to visit Guyana on Thursday but that
00:30:16
qualify. Ired to be played in commodity
is in jeopardy right now world football's
00:30:23
governing body feet 1st suspended
Sierra Leone 4 days ago for government
00:30:28
interference Sierra Leone has appealed
the suspension for reaction to the
00:30:35
suspension reporter Iron Mike in-born Yeah
I spoke with the sports editor of The
00:30:41
News Agency of Nigeria Peter Damian
00:30:44
a geo for it is already known to ban worse
because of government intervention it's
00:30:50
a good development for football in Africa
food book globally I said this because
00:30:57
government in their fair and side led to
crises in the money demand of football in
00:31:02
Africa in fact it's also responsible for
Milan ministration unaccountability in
00:31:07
a non share corruption is similar thing
almost happened to Nigeria on them but the
00:31:12
2 countries quickly obeyed the deadline
given by Fifa What do you fink African
00:31:17
countries should do to stay away from
governmental affairs and to save themselves
00:31:22
from 50 or so special African countries
should lend from these developments and
00:31:29
begin to walk for the financial independence
of the book of name bodies in the
00:31:35
countries where financial independence
issues of my land ministration corruption
00:31:41
are not contact Billy d.
00:31:43
Under law that issues that lead to
crises in football management would be
00:31:46
eliminated because do screwy state down
money in food bowl would want to ask
00:31:51
questions about how good ball is wrong too
I think that the 1st India should do is
00:31:57
to seek financial independence of the.
Governing bodies in the Al respective
00:32:03
countries if that is done those bodies will
now begin to get funding by themselves
00:32:09
I give you an example in Nigeria for
instance when my droopy Nick became the
00:32:14
president of the Nigerian Football Federation
he me. He didn't really said I had to
00:32:18
walk to get sponsors or Nigerian food book
we have examples in NY to go which is
00:32:24
sponsored by the energy company we
have Coca-Cola and we have seen his
00:32:30
administration attract
00:32:31
a lot of goodwill from companies here in
Nigeria for instance keenness who survived
00:32:37
us 2 I think he should walk for financial
independence once they secured everyone
00:32:42
that info's in place the you think various
governments in Africa will want to be
00:32:47
steamy we're in the role of football I mean
especially the continent do you foresee
00:32:51
that I don't care as long as I do want
to fund in full bore especially at the
00:32:57
national level I don't see them not
interfering because he would be easy by about
00:33:02
the days to tune so one thing we should
fight for East to make these bodies
00:33:09
independent good our own fortunes and run
for their own way on their own terms and
00:33:14
for Syria has received this if if I'm
now what do you think we should do to
00:33:19
overcome it it's very simple the shoot sure
that the president Johanson and he said
00:33:26
tree I restored to office I mean to
00:33:28
a lot of going to Shan sacrificed like
giving them access to administration access
00:33:34
to the premisses access to the bodies
accounts that's the only way they can get out
00:33:41
of anything fiber that's Peter Damian agio
for the sports editor of The News Agency
00:33:47
of Nigeria and Peter spoke with
reporter Iron Mike in Lagos Nigeria

I'm Sonny young and you're listening

00:34:17
Football magazine on December 3rd in
Paris Argentine superstar Li an elm
00:34:24
Messi and Portugal's Cristiana Rinaldo
have dominated the Bolland door over the
00:34:30
past decade and they're both on that 30
man short list the last player to win the
00:34:36
trophy before either Rinaldo or
Messi was the Brazilian Ca in
00:34:43
2007. Croatia and Ryall Madrid

London last month I'm Sonny young
and you're listening to me side of
00:36:04
sports on the Voice of America.
Well sometimes football
00:36:11
is more than just a game it's
00:36:14
a way of life that expresses the true spirit
of the team and its community. That's
00:36:21
the underlying message behind Amy
Bass's new book one goal a coach
00:36:26
a team and the game that brought
00:36:29
a divided town together
it's the inspiring story of
00:36:34
a group of teenage Somali
refugees in the northeastern u.s.
00:36:38
State of Maine who joined the Lewiston
high school soccer team and overcame
00:36:44
prejudice and other obstacles to help the
squad when the 2015 state championship.
00:36:52
In her conversation with Vo ways Adam
Philips Bass said that one goal is
00:36:58
actually about 2 games games the game of
soccer the most global of sports but it's
00:37:04
also about
00:37:04
a very specific game that took place in
the fall of 2015 when the Lewiston Blue
00:37:09
Devils went to seek their 1st state
championship title in soccer with
00:37:14
a very different kind of roster tell me a
bit about Louis Louis to me and it was
00:37:19
a largely French Canadian town
00:37:21
a former factory town textile industry the
bottom fell out when factories closed
00:37:26
and moved out of the northeast so it was
00:37:28
a town that had seen better days
and in 2001 a couple and then
00:37:33
a couple 100 in the couple 1000 Molly
refugees found their way to lose didn't
00:37:38
taking advantage of the vailable apartments
that had the rates and good schools and
00:37:43
a safe community to begin to continue their
lives and raise their families in the
00:37:48
United States and some of these kids found
their way to the soccer team soccer is
00:37:53
a passion and this story is about his
coming together of community and family and
00:37:59
team in this quest for this state title
and what it means to this community and
00:38:04
what it represents you know community is
not just about statistics it's also about
00:38:08
a feeling a feeling of home and a
feeling of belonging and that's
00:38:11
a priority here since you said there were
lots and lots of growing pains at least
00:38:15
at 1st I mean it's hard to think of 2
cultures that are more different than Samoan
00:38:19
culture these people came from and they
needed to bring with theirs they founded
00:38:23
post-industrial Lewiston Maine you know I
mean on the internet this is very much
00:38:26
a fish out of water story you know people's
reaction is why are there Africans in
00:38:30
Maine it's such
00:38:31
a cold state it's overwhelmingly white state
in the early days you had moments like
00:38:36
when the former mayor wrote an open letter
to the Somali community saying you know
00:38:39
we support you please tell your friends
and family to stop coming weeks you don't
00:38:43
have anymore and so that's a painful moment
but it's hollowed by a coming together
00:38:48
a giant rally that the community puts
together kids. Sort of say No You know we are
00:38:53
many and we are one so there's something
00:38:55
a bit more to it than either the 2 groups
polarizing or sort of becoming one Hubba
00:38:59
Gini is a group without
distinctions it's really
00:39:03
a negotiation amongst different peoples
to to find a path forward and there's
00:39:08
a lot of culture clash but Maine is the
oldest median age in the United States and
00:39:14
q.
00:39:15
Have folks who are interested in laying
roots and raising families and having their
00:39:19
families raise families was
00:39:22
a shock me arm that Lewiston needed in terms
of attracting business and attracting
00:39:26
industry in the city that I hadn't
seen that for a very long time in
00:39:30
a state that doesn't see that of course
it's not really equivalent with both Lewis
00:39:35
and community and the Somalis had both
experiences drama and displacement the small
00:39:40
ways obviously because of war and famine
and cetera but the loosened folks had also
00:39:45
been through
00:39:45
a lot I could understand perhaps why it
least at 1st there might have been some
00:39:49
resentment against refugees lose them
has had decades and decades of white
00:39:54
intergenerational poverty as some of the
poorest neighborhoods in Maine and there
00:39:59
is that sort of competitive What are these
new people getting and I'm not getting
00:40:04
so all this is great back when it's know
about the growth in integration within the
00:40:08
Louis and high school I do there are lots
of reasons slurs and things that opposing
00:40:12
teams use but it seems like people got
together pretty well within Lewis in itself
00:40:17
family started coming on to the team
in the mid to early 2000 just a few at
00:40:21
a time and the book sort of details some
of those early players coming on in
00:40:26
different kinds of accommodations that
00:40:28
a lot of department heads think about in
terms of you know diet in Ramadan and how
00:40:32
to integrate players and create relationships
amongst players but slowly the Somali
00:40:39
players began to dominate the varsity
roster I know that soccer was in such
00:40:43
a huge deal and all of the moves to before
the Somalis arrived then began to really
00:40:48
shine correct Lucent said championship
Accutane. At the championship cheerleading
00:40:53
town and slowly soccer was becoming
00:40:55
a marquee sport they make it to the state
championship in 2014 they suffered
00:41:00
a devastating loss and you know the day
after that loss the next season begins
00:41:06
because they are determined that they're
going to be the ones to bring this city
00:41:11
its 1st championship in this sport and
it's really an all hands on deck kind of
00:41:14
effort he has
00:41:15
a high school coach is working but the
families and the supporters of the team we
00:41:19
see community organizations you know
Somali founded community organizations are
00:41:24
sponsoring soccer programs and
supporting youth and we see
00:41:28
a bridging of cultures amongst coaches
you know the longtime head coach of
00:41:32
a high school team hiring objects of our
Hersey the 1st Somali hired by the loose
00:41:36
an athletic department is the son of Bob
Dylan he is sort of the coach of everyone
00:41:41
in the city
00:41:41
a mentor of everyone so it's really about
thinking about what these kids in this
00:41:47
community bring to the game and it isn't
that soccer replaces hockey in this main
00:41:51
city it's that now it's
00:41:52
a hockey and soccer town that was
Amy bass author of one goal a coach
00:41:59
a team and the game that brought
00:42:01
a divided town together she spoke with
Vo ways Adam Philips and New York I'm
00:42:08

listening to the sunny side of sports on the
00:42:14
Voice of America.
00:42:32
My v.o.a.
00:42:33
Colleague when Newton joins us now with
some news about the Shanghai Masters men's
00:42:39
tennis tournament which is underway in
China sporty greetings. Sporty Greetings
00:42:46
sunny Argentine Juan Martinez Germany's
Alexanders the Vera. And defending
00:42:53
champion Roger Federer of Switzerland
are featured in the tournament. The man
00:42:59
Federer defeated in last year's
final is recovering from
00:43:03
a knee injury and is not there but he's
been replaced by Serbian Novak Djokovic who
00:43:09
on Tuesday defeated Frenchman Jeremy day
for the 12th straight time spoke after the
00:43:16
match and said he feels like
he's playing at top form. I
00:43:23
think.
00:43:37
That's pretty close to the joke of it's
played his 1st match on the a.t.p.
00:43:41
Tour since winning his 14th Grand
Slam title at last month's u.s.
00:43:46
Open and Tuesday's win marks the 14th
consecutive victory on the hard court said
00:43:53
after having surgery These
are good signs he's making
00:43:56
a full recovery very.
Beginning of the year.
00:44:18
Also in the spotlight but for
00:44:20
a very different reason Australian the
curios created controversy for 3rd straight
00:44:26
year in Shanghai going against an
Instagram message he posted ahead of the
00:44:31
tournament with the caption I'll be good I
promise on Monday curious faced American
00:44:36
Bradley Khan and in his defense curious was
good for about 30 minutes then early in
00:44:43
the 2nd said Curious with
00:44:45
a soft warning for what the chair umpire
called his borderline effort to which
00:44:51
curious. Reportedly responded I don't care
you have no right to tell me that it's
00:44:56
poor all timidly though his game unraveled
incurious lost his 1st round match
00:45:01
466463 Roger Federer has been an
outspoken critic of carious and in
00:45:08
a media conference ahead of his 1st match
Federer said whether or not Kerry is ever
00:45:13
reaches his full potential is entirely up
to him time will tell you know I think
00:45:19
he's
00:45:19
a great player. I feel also he can you know
bigger tournaments and do all these things
00:45:25
but there's still
00:45:27
a process in place that he needs to do like
any other player needs to go through to
00:45:30
be able to be successful Federer currently
ranked number 2 in the world is hungry
00:45:35
for a win following his
elimination at last month's u.s.
00:45:39
Open and he says he's ready to defend his
title in Shanghai feel like. I'm where I
00:45:45
want to be. I know this is
where I could be playing
00:45:49
a lot of tennis you know depending on how
I play so the. Shanghai is likely to be
00:45:56
Federer's final Masters great tournaments
of the year he said he has no plans to
00:46:01
play in the Masters $1000.00 tournaments
in Paris later this month and he says it
00:46:06
feels good to be in the season's homestretch.
Like this part of the season as you
00:46:12
know it's been always
00:46:13
a good season for me because this is going
faster I'm not sure if I have always
00:46:19
energy left in the tank or you
know it's helpful that I have
00:46:22
a home tournament the World Tour Finals
is where it is and on the surface it is
00:46:28
played on but I've been very successful.
For something similar again this year
00:46:34
Federer also spoke about
00:46:35
a match at the Sens and open last week in
China where Spaniard Fernando Verdasco
00:46:41
appeared to berate
00:46:42
a ball boy for not bringing him his towel
quickly enough video of the incident lit
00:46:48
up social media and followers expressed
their few. Yury over what they regarded as
00:46:53
for those intimidating behavior Federer
stopped short of criticizing for Das go but
00:46:59
called on tennis players to show their
respect for ball boys and girls Federer who
00:47:05
was once himself
00:47:06
a ball boy said although young helpers
understand the amount of pressure the
00:47:11
players are under it is
important that they too have
00:47:14
a good experience at tournaments on court
helpers handing players their towels
00:47:19
drinks than anything else they need is
00:47:22
a fairly new phenomenon not so long ago
tennis legends like American John McEnroe
00:47:27
and Sweden's Bjorn Borg had to take care
of themselves during changeovers and that
00:47:33
idea could be making a comeback next
month that next generation a.t.p.
00:47:38
Finals youth tournament in Milan towel
racks will replace ball kids at the end of
00:47:44
the court in one final bit of controversy
3 chair umpire is from Thailand have been
00:47:50
banned for life the umpires were found
guilty of match fixing and manipulating
00:47:56
scores at i
00:47:57
t f futures tournaments in 2017 the
tennis Integrity Unit released
00:48:03
a statement on Monday and mounting the
sanctions it said all 3 pirates have
00:48:08
admitted the breaches and the lifetime
bans are effective immediately and that's
00:48:13
all for me set me back over to
you Thanks Gwen that's my v.o.a.
00:48:18
Colleague. Sonny young and

00:48:24

a surprise hitting star in game 3 now Brock
didn't even play in the 1st 2 games of
00:49:36
the series and he became the 1st player in
Major League baseball postseason history
00:49:43
to hit for the cycle in a game that
is Brock got a single a double
00:49:49
a triple and a homerun to us Brock it was
00:49:53
a good night overall for everyone and like
I said you know this is this is why our
00:49:58
nor for
00:49:59
a long time and hopefully we can carry
this over Brock Holt and the Red Sox are
00:50:03
hoping to carry over their winning ways
in game 4 which will be played later
00:50:09
Tuesday night at Yankee Stadium in New
York in National League playoffs results
00:50:16
Monday the Los Angeles Dodgers defeated the
Atlanta Braves 62 to win that series 3
00:50:22
games to one shortstop Manny Machado's
sealed the Dodgers victory with
00:50:29
a 3 run homer in the 7th inning.
I mean obviously the result of
00:50:34
a. Stick with the same approach much
